WESTLANDS
SOLAR PARK
250 MW Solar Park
Westlands Solar Park (WSP) is a remarkable renewable energy project located in California's San Joaquin Valley. It encompasses over 20,000 acres and is designed to be one of the largest permitted solar parks globally. The first phase of WSP includes Aquamarine, a 250-megawatt solar photovoltaic project. Aquamarine became fully operational in fall of 2021 and delivers 50 megawatts of capacity to the Valley Clean Energy Alliance, a local electricity provider serving several California cities and counties. With the potential to expand to over 2,700 megawatts, WSP has the capacity to provide clean energy to more than 1.2 million homes.
WSP has obtained a completed and certified programmatic environmental impact report for the entire project, demonstrating its commitment to sustainable development. It is also recognized as a Competitive Renewable Energy Zone (CREZ) through the Renewable Energy Transmission Initiative (RETI) process. One of the key benefits of WSP is its contribution to improving air quality in the San Joaquin Valley, as solar energy generation does not produce fine particulate pollution, which has historically been a significant concern in the area. The project has garnered strong support from environmental organizations such as the Sierra Club, NRDC, Defenders of Wildlife, and the Center for Biological Diversity.
WSP aligns with California's renewable energy mandate and aims to address multiple policy objectives, including greenhouse gas reduction and the promotion of carbon-free energy.
